Skin Lipid Biomarkers for Prediction of Atopic Dermatitis and Food Allergy Risk
Hui-Beckman J, Ferruggia K
This report highlights emerging research on skin lipid biomarkers as early predictors of atopic dermatitis and food allergy, focusing on how alterations in skin barrier composition precede disease onset. The findings show that infants who later develop atopic dermatitis or food allergy exhibit distinct lipid abnormalities, such as reduced ceramides and altered lipid maturation, which weaken the skin barrier and promote allergic inflammation. These results emphasize the importance of early identification and skin barrier–targeted interventions as potential strategies for prevention and improved management of allergic disease.
