Exposure to Vaginal Microbiome in C-Section Infants at High Risk for Allergies

ACTIVATE, an exploratory randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study evaluated whether vaginal seeding in cesarean-delivered infants reduces food allergen sensitization at 12 months in a high-risk population. Vaginal seeding was safe but did not reduce food allergen sensitization compared with placebo among cesarean-delivered infants. These findings suggest that, despite its effect on microbiota, vaginal seeding does not meaningfully impact early allergic sensitization in this high-risk group.
