Microbiome Associations With Food Sensitization in the ACTIVATE Trial

This microbiome analysis within the ACTIVATE trial evaluated whether vaginal seeding in cesarean-delivered infants alters early-life microbiota and whether these changes are associated with food allergen sensitization at 12 months. Vaginal seeding led to partial transfer of maternal vaginal microbes (e.g., Lactobacillus) and transient shifts in the infant microbiome toward a vaginally delivered profile early in life. However, specific microbial species, rather than seeding itself, were associated with later food sensitization, suggesting potential immunomodulatory roles of the microbiome in allergic outcomes.
