David L. Green, MD, PhD, MBA, founder and CEO of R3 Stem Cell International, discusses stem cell therapy for kidney failure in South Africa. He explains the function of the kidneys and the reasons for kidney failure, with high blood pressure and diabetes being the most common causes. He notes that 13% of all US adults have chronic kidney disease (CKD), and estimates that about 10% of South Africa’s population, or 6 million people, have CKD. Traditional treatments can be helpful, but dialysis and transplantation are often necessary. Research shows that stem cell therapy can improve kidney function and slow the progression of CKD. He emphasizes that the stem cells used are from umbilical cord tissue, not embryonic stem cells, and are safe and effective.
