Beth A. Vogt, MD discusses Post-infectious Glomerulonephritis (GN), often following strep infections, affects children aged 5-15. Symptoms typically emerge 7-14 days post-infection and include cola-colored urine, edema, hypertension, and fatigue due to kidney inflammation caused by immune complex deposition. Diagnosis reveals hematuria, red cell casts, and low C3 levels. Treatment is supportive, involving fluid restriction, diuretics, and blood pressure management. Recovery is excellent, with symptoms resolving in weeks and microscopic hematuria possibly persisting for up to two years. No biopsy or immunosuppression is required, as the condition self-resolves with time.
