Fouad Chebib, MD, a Mayo Clinic nephrologist and expert on polycystic kidney disease, discusses the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in predicting kidney failure in patients with polycystic kidney disease, specifically autosomal-dominant PKD. It is noted that half of these patients reach kidney failure by their early fifties and 75% by their early sixties. Dr Chebib and Mayo Clinic researchers have been using AI to collect data from imaging, such as total kidney volume, which is then processed through their AI cloud. These data are used to predict future kidney function and potential kidney failure, providing patients with valuable information for future decision-making.
