Brian Shuch, MD, director of the UCLA Kidney Cancer Program, explains what to expect after a radical nephrectomy. The procedure can be done minimally invasively, either laparoscopically or robotically, in 90% of cases. Prior to surgery, patients should manage their medical issues, stop certain medications, and prepare their bodies through exercise, good nutrition, and smoking cessation. Post surgery, patients can expect some pain and discomfort, but most can go home within 24 hours. Recovery involves a gradual return to normal activities, with a follow-up appointment scheduled for 2 to 3 weeks after surgery.
