Amira Abdelrasoul, PhD, PEng, is an associate professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and the Division of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan. She discusses her motivation to solve dialysis problems and improve the quality of life for patients after losing a family member to kidney failure. Dr Abdelrasoul highlights the prevalence of chronic kidney disease in Canada, with 1 in 10 Canadians affected and millions more at risk. She also explains the progression of kidney disease, the lack of available donors for transplants, and the complications associated with hemodialysis. Dr Abdelrasoul discusses the high costs of hemodialysis and the low survival rates for patients. Her research focuses on creating more compatible membranes for dialysis and developing an artificial wearable kidney. Finally, she emphasizes the importance of controlling other medical conditions and making healthy lifestyle choices to protect kidney health.
