Scientists from the Trabolsi Research Group, headed by Ali Trabolsi, PhD, assistant professor of chemistry at NYU Abu Dhabi, are working on nanoparticle technology that could revolutionize targeted drug delivery. Professor Trabolsi and lead researcher Farah Benyettou, PhD have developed “a structure where several nanoparticles cluster together to create a porous ‘super’ nanoparticle” that can transport medicine to the site of the tumor or disease using magnetic guidance. Once at the target, the doxorubicin-loaded CB[7]-modified nanoparticle structure can be activated to release its drug payload by applying alternating magnetic frequencies. The progress can also be monitored using MRI.
