Using an MRI, doctors are able to detect prostate cancer more effectively than the a traditional biopsy, which uses ultrasound technology. According to a study published in JAMA, the targeted MRI-guided biopsy yielded a 30 percent increase in the detection of high-risk prostate cancer, as compared to traditional biopsies. This new technology will enable health care providers to recognize cancer more effectively, in addition to avoiding mistakenly diagnosing a benign growth as one that is malignant.
