Melanoma’s link to sun exposure may not be as straightforward as commonly thought. While outdoor workers have higher UV exposure, studies like a European case-control study and the Nurse’s Health Study part two show no increased risk of melanoma compared to indoor workers. Factors like skin sensitivity and the ability to tan might influence this paradox. Some suggest that consistent, low-level sun exposure may lead to “photo adaptation” where increased pigmentation and thicker skin offer some protection. However, this also indicates UV damage has occurred, making the connection between UV exposure and melanoma more complex than for other skin cancers.
