Jack Stern, MD, PhD, discusses the indications for the use of artificial cervical discs replacing the need for cervical spinal fusion.

1.The artificial cervical disc is a relatively new FDA-approved modality which allows patients with cord or root compression to retain mobility around the diseased spinal level without the need for spinal fusion.

2. Two discs have been approved for use in the US and so far the data shows both work very effectively, although the effects of wear and tear are not yet known.
