What is Causing Hospital Readmissions After Surgery?

The JAMA Report

While most patients want to check out of the hospital and return to their homes as soon as possible, few consider the unfortunate complications that could occur and bring them back. In a study published in JAMA, researchers looked at data from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program. The study found that 5.7 percent of patients were readmitted to the hospital within 30 days after surgery, with wound infection representing the most common cause of readmission.
