Brad Leibovich, MD, a urologic oncologist at Mayo Clinic, explains that kidney cancer in its early stages often presents no signs or symptoms and there is no screening test for it. Most kidney tumors are discovered accidentally during scans for other issues. Patients who are asymptomatic and have their cancer discovered this way have a high likelihood of being cured. Symptoms of advanced kidney cancer can include loss of appetite, weight loss, fevers, night sweats, abdominal pain, and blood in the urine. Doctors may also notice nonspecific signs such as low blood counts. However, these symptoms can also be caused by benign conditions unrelated to kidney cancer. If a kidney tumor is found, prompt treatment can improve the patient’s prognosis.
