Silent Epidemic of Chronic Severe Pain Affects One in Five Americans

Chronic severe pain affects one in five Americans. Complex regional pain syndrome, a subtype of chronic severe pain, is a severe pain disorder that develops following minor surgery or trauma as a result of the healing process going awry. The syndrome — sometimes referred to as suicide disease — is extremely disabling, affecting every facet of a patient’s life.
