The Neurology Channel
Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) involves neurological symptoms arising from brain network changes rather than structural damage, often described as a “software” issue rather than a “hardware” problem. Symptoms include weakness, sensory loss, abnormal movements, speech issues, and seizures, often alongside fatigue, cognitive difficulties, and chronic pain. Diagnosis relies on clinical findings, including Hoover’s sign and giveway weakness, rather than exclusion. Treatment focuses on education, physiotherapy, psychological therapy (CBT, DBT), and multidisciplinary care, with SSRIs or SNRIs used for comorbid anxiety or depression. Early recognition and intervention can improve quality of life.
