Rapid testing for the influenza virus can help clinicians better manage symptoms when detected early and potentially reduce the amount of antibiotics being prescribed as a cautionary or reactionary measure. In the recent past, the quicker tests – which reduce diagnostic times from hours to minutes – were only available in hospitals. But that is changing as new technologies make rapid testing available to private practices, urgent care centers, and pharmacies.
