Researchers in Australia are developing new approaches to blocking inflammasomes, the multiprotein molecular complex that stimulates the body’s inflammatory immune response and drives the progression of Parkinson’s disease and other conditions.

Specifically, scientists are attempting to pinpoint how inflammasomes are assembled in the brain in hopes of detecting and stopping their formation. They are attempting to do so through drug repurposing, or testing drugs already approved for other immunological conditions to determine whether they might also help block inflammasomes in the brain.
