Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a widely-used neurological technique for modifying and rehabilitating brain function. Closed-loop or “smart” DBS systems currently under development are the next evolutionary step in neuronal signal augmentation and may offer physicians more individualized treatment possibilities for their patients.

Unlike traditional methods that only deliver electrical output to targeted locations at predetermined intervals, closed-loop systems can “learn” by taking in data about the surrounding area and tailor targeting outputs accordingly, resulting in more precise delivery.
