Inflammation in CKD

Majd Isreb, MD, FACP, FASN, IFMCP, from the Integrative Kidney Institute, discusses the link between inflammation and chronic kidney disease (CKD). He explains that CKD patients have higher rates of cardiovascular disease, heart disease, protein energy wasting, and increased mortality rates, all of which have been linked to inflammation. CKD patients have decreased clearance of cytokines, leading to elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines in the blood. To combat inflammation, it is suggested that decreasing uremic toxins through a plant-dominant diet, correcting vitamin D deficiency, and using supplements such as omega fatty acids, green tea extract, pomegranate, isoflavones fibers, prebiotics, and probiotics.
