Rashmi Roy, MD, FACS, describes primary hyperparathyroidism, how it may be diagnosed, and a solution for patients suffering from this condition. Most instances of parathyroid adenomas affect just one of the four parathyroid glands. However, one-in-five cases can involve two, three, or all four of the glands.

During a patient workup, primary hyperparathyroidism can be identified by elevated levels of calcium and parathyroid hormones in the blood. A patient with these symptoms would then be referred to an endocrine surgeon for ultrasound and SPECT/CT imaging. Upon confirmation of the condition, Dr. Roy recommends a minimally invasive parathyroidectomy.
