At the emergency room of St. Joseph Hospital in Southern California, which treats about 500 psychiatric patients each month, clinical staff created a specialized environment better suited for those patients. In the traditional ER setting, psychiatric patients experience much longer wait times and higher levels of stress compared with other patients. In the specialized ER unit, a low level of noise and soft light help clinical staff to stabilize the patients quickly.
