Time is crucial after an acute heart attack. Many patients undergo a primary percutaneous coronary intervention or PCI to open blocked coronary arteries. Cardiologists do this by implanting a stent made of metallic mesh in the involved artery. Some of these stents can also release medication. A new study examined whether the next-generation drug-eluting stent is more effective than a bare-metal stent. Catherine Dolf has more in this week’s JAMA Report.
