David Coleman, MD, clinical assistant professor at the University of Washington Medical Center, and Shireesha Dhanireddy, MD, professor and medical director of the Infectious Disease Clinic at Harborview Medical Center, discuss the COVID-19 vaccines in the context of allergies. Among patients who experienced anaphylactic reactions to the vaccine, up to 86% had a history of allergic reactions and these reactions occurred within an average of 15 minutes. Dr Coleman notes that although serious, anaphylactic reactions are very rare, at 2.8 to 5 per million doses administered. It is currently recommended to complete the vaccination course; however, a risk-benefit discussion may be necessary for patients who experience severe reactions.
