Carolyn Gershenson, RN, MSM, MPH, CDE, Long Island Diabetes and Endocrinology and Babylon Medical Practice, talks about the general problems practitioners have when treating complicated patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. According to Gershenson, primary care physicians have issues because they treat a number of different conditions, making it difficult to address all of the complexities associated with diabetes. For optimal care of diabetes, Gershenson recommends that physicians in primary care or internal medicine should refer out to diabetes specialists, or consider bringing a diabetes expert into their office.
