Transplantation of neurons may be able to reverse the progression of Parkinson’s disease; however, the survival of transplanted neurons remains a challenge. Researchers at the National University of Ireland Galway are searching for ways to improve the outcomes of neural transplantation in the brain: They use biomaterials to protect and nurture transplanted neurons. A recent study has shown a five-fold increase in the survival of transplanted neurons in the presence of the biomaterial. Biomaterials can also carry drugs that support neurons after the transplantation.
