Christian Pettker, MD, is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at Yale University. He discusses the outcome of the university’s research on patient safety.

Summary
A recent study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology showed a decrease in adverse outcomes from 3.5% to 2.25% and improved patient safety during labor and delivery. This was achieved by standardizing practices, hiring a patient safety nurse, intervening with electronic fetal monitoring and auditing all practices.
