Kristen Kulasa, MD, VA San Diego Healthcare System discusses point of care, how often patients should monitor their blood sugar, and how to determine outpatient regimens. Right now most physicians are using point of care meters to obtain the blood sugar value. The issue with this is finding the source and the right location for a sample. Patients must have good blood pressure, not be septic or in shock, not require vasopressors, and have warm and perfused extremities. If not, a more central source, like arterial or venous blood is used.
