Philip O’Connell, PhD, Director of the Centre for Transplant and Renal Research at the Westmead Institute and Director of Transplant Medicine and the Clinical Islet Transplant Program at Westmead Hospital, discusses pancreatic islet transplantation for the treatment of type 1 diabetes. Dr. O’Connell explains that insulin treatment only delays organ complications, like kidney failure, related to this autoimmune disease without solving the problem. Early clinical trial results suggest human islet pancreatic cells transplanted into type 1 diabetic patients will naturally begin to produce insulin.
