Surekha Pendyal, MSc, MEd, RD, FAND, from Duke University Medical Center, discusses nutritional considerations for patients with Pompe disease during the Muscular Dystrophy Association Engage Pompe Symposium in July 2020. A low-carbohydrate/high-protein diet should be considered to reduce glycogen accumulation in lysosomes, protein breakdown, and muscle damage, and to stimulate protein synthesis. This diet may be beneficial with an individualized exercise program. According to Ms Pendyal, diet should be individualized based on the feeding abilities and nutritional needs of each patient.
