Dan H. Barouch, MD, PhD, the William Bosworth Castle Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and director of the Center for Virology and Vaccine Research at Beth-Israel Deaconess Medical Center, along with his research team, published findings from two studies in the journal Science that suggest vaccination against COVID-19 is viable in animal models.

The first study analyzed the neutralizing antibody responses in rhesus macaques after administration of candidate vaccines, each employing a different variant of the key viral protein. Six of these experimental DNA vaccines were successful in producing antibody responses and providing some level of protection against COVID-19.

The second study showed that macaques who recovered from a previous infection of SARS-CoV-2 developed antibodies which provided a level of protection against reinfection.
