Melanie McKay, a mother of a child with infantile-onset Pompe disease, discusses the importance of newborn screening. Early signs and symptoms of Pompe disease can be misleading; therefore, an early diagnosis can be difficult until after the occurrence of irreversible damage. Now, Pompe disease is part of the Recommended Uniform Screening Program and some states have started to include it in newborn screening panels. According to Ms McKay, only 8 states tested for Pompe in 2016 when her son was born, and unfortunately, her home state of Oregon was not one of them. There are now 22 states, including Oregon, that test for Pompe disease.
