As lawmakers seek to reform the healthcare system, they’re going to have to address the $300 billion gorilla that keeps getting put on the backburner. According to some estimates, that’s how much it could cost to replace the troublesome formula that sets Medicare payments for physicians. The Sustainable Growth Rate, or SGR, formula ties Medicare payments to doctors to several factors, including changes in the economy, the total cost of physician services in previous years and the number of Medicare beneficiaries.
