National Museum of the American Indian is an institution of living cultures dedicated to the life, literature, history, languages, and arts of the Native peoples of the Western Hemisphere. The collection includes more than 800,000 objects, as well as a photographic archive of 125,000 images. The majority of photographic images range in date from 1860 to 1930, but also include images of contemporary events. The Native Landscape, as the museum calls its grounds, occupies almost 74 percent of the museum site.
