The Scott Monument, completed in 1844, was built in honor of Sir Walter Scott, author of novels such as Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, Waverley, and The Lady of the Lake. Surrounding the monument are statues commemorating many of the characters in those novels. Inside, there’s a museum on the first floor, where you can learn more about the monument and Sir Walter Scott, followed by a series of viewing decks reached by climbing narrow spiral staircases. The highest viewing deck is located at the top of 287 steps, but the fantastic view of Edinburgh is worth the workout!

With its rich history and great views of the city, the Scott Monument is a must on any visit to Edinburgh.
