Begun in 1947 as a means of promoting peace and unity in Europe after WWII, the International Festival is Edinburgh’s premier arts festival, showcasing some of the best opera, theater and ballet companies in the world. And it was out of this celebration of the arts that the now equally famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival grew, which today is the largest performing arts festival of its kind.

Both festivals take place in August. With over 3000 shows combined, you could not ask for a finer assembly of theater and arts from all over the world.
