Through embryonic stem cells and skin cells, scientists have successfully created human sperm and eggs, CBS News reports. A study published in the journal Cell describes scientists’ discovery of the single gene known as SOX17, which plays a key role in the development of cells that go on to become sperm and eggs. While the lab-grown sperm and eggs were not fertile, scientists are hopeful that this discovery will open a gateway to age-related diseases such as cancer, and a better understanding of genes and gene expressions.
