Richard Gallagher, MD, Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at New York Medical College and also a faculty member of the Columbia University Psychoanalytic Center, discusses best practices in treating schizophrenia. He describes the treatment of schizophrenia with pharmacotherapy, particularly clozapine, which has shown improved efficacy compared to other antipsychotics. Acute psychosis is probably best managed by an antipsychotic plus a benzodiazepine to control agitation. Atypical drugs can alsobe effective, such as IM.
