After being diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa at age 11 and losing his vision, Jeroen Perk was equipped with the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System. Just the second person in the Netherlands with a ‘bionic’ eye, Perk is now able to visualize and enjoy various activities through using a chip with 60 electrodes planted in his eye, and a small computer which has settings for day and night. Currently, the Argus II is only functional with retinitis pigmentosa, though researchers hope to expand the use of this technology for a host of other forms of vision loss.
