Woman Diagnosed With Rare Extreme Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis

An article from CBS News reported that a woman diagnosed with a rare drug resistant form of tuberculosis, XDR-TB, traveled extensively putting a significant number of people at risk, while she should have been in isolation. The foreign woman was in the United States for seven weeks before requiring hospitalization in Chicago where she was eventually transferred to an isolation unit at an NIH hospital in Maryland. While her doctors are working with experimental treatments, health officials from Illinois are working to determine which individuals she had contact with such as those she sat near on the plane or those she lived with. Within the U.S., total diagnoses of tuberculosis have been decreasing but globally the disease still afflicts approximately 9 million people annually with a fifteen percent fatality rate.
