Will the Condom Contest Get Men to Actually Use Them?

An article in The New York Times reports that a contest organized by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation encouraged participates to develop a condom that men would actually use. The foundation explained that the purpose of the contest was “to decrease unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases with ‘a next-generation condom that significantly preserves or enhances pleasure’.” Of the 812 applications, 11 were selected as winners and received $100,000 each. Many of the ideas involved creating condoms from different materials besides latex, such as collagen fibers from cows’ Achilles tendons or fish skin. The foundation is hopeful that the development of new condoms will increase use among people who are sexually active.
