Why US Maternity Costs Are World’s Highest

An article in The New York Times examines why maternity care costs in the United States are the world’s most expensive, including analysis of the common practice to bill expectant mothers on an “item by item” basis rather than by one general fee. Hospitals that do offer one fee for a pregnancy often neglect to include “extras” like amniocentesis or epidural anesthesia during labor in their pregnancy fee. The Times also cites social reasons to explain the high costs, such as the fact that “mothers are now older than ever before, and therefore more likely to require or request more expensive prenatal testing.”
