Sequencing an individual patient’s genome is no longer cost prohibitive. Physicians can use this information to develop custom-tailored treatments that have shown efficacy in other patients with similar genetic characteristics. This is the basis of precision medicine and in late February of 2016 the White House held a summit to promote continued research in this field.
