Brian Shuch, MD, director of the UCLA Kidney Cancer Program, discusses what to expect after a robotic-assisted partial nephrectomy. The procedure is performed using a da Vinci robot to enhance the surgeon’s capabilities. The day before surgery, patients are advised to consume clear liquids and refrain from eating. Physical activity and a healthy diet are recommended to aid recovery. During the procedure, the surgeon uses the robot to cut out the tumor and repair the kidney. Post surgery, patients may experience pain and are encouraged to get out of bed as soon as possible. Most patients can go home within 24 hours and return to work within 4 to 8 weeks.
