Weekend Drug Use Making Its Way Into the Work Week

According to the LA Times, a study published in Annals of Family Medicine has found that people who use drugs recreationally on weekends often start using them during the work week as well. Researchers reported that more than 50 percent of people who said they only used drugs between Friday night and Sunday night admitted to weekday drug use when asked again just six months later. At the same six month interval, 26.9 percent of weekend-only drug users reported they had stopped using drugs entirely. Often, when a patient tells a doctor he or she uses drugs only on weekends, the doctor does not note a problem and does not follow up on the topic. These findings suggest the importance for doctors to monitor their patient’s drug use over time due to the likelihood of that drug use increasing over time.
