Use of Tobacco Products Increasing Amongst Teens

Although the government has cracked down on the sale of cigarettes, new data from the CDC shows that the use of e-cigarettes and other forms of tobacco, such as hookah, has skyrocketed, NBC News reports. Officials report that the increase in use may be due to decreasing prices for these devices or increased marketing. The CDC report states that “use in the past 30 days jumped more than 83 percent among middle-school youth and 86 percent among high-schoolers between 2011 and 2012.” Additionally, hookah use jumped about 30% between 2011 and 2012. The findings have caused concern over the highly addictive products and have caused officials to implement stricter sales guidelines for these products to children and adolescents.
