As the measles virus continues to spread rapidly, the US surgeon general Dr. Vivek Murthy is emphasizing the importance of vaccinations, CBS News reports. While the US has a 92 percent vaccination rate, the number of exemptions due to religious and health exemptions is slowly increasing. The measles vaccine, given in two doses, increases one’s protection rate by 97 percent. However, not getting the vaccine gives a person a 90 percent chance of catching the disease after exposure. Currently, there are at least 131 confirmed measles cases across 14 states, causing multiple day care centers to close due to safety risks and exposures.
