Trans Fats Expected to Receive New Classification by the FDA

The FDA may soon require that trans fats need federal approval before being put into foods by manufacturers, according to CBS News. Currently, trans fats are classified by the FDA as “generally recognized as safe”. However, new rules that will be voted on soon would classify trans fat as additives, therefore requiring that they receive federal approval before companies include them in food products. The FDA estimates that as many as 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths per year due to heart disease could be prevented if the rules are updated.
