Struggling With Obesity? Exercise and Diet May Not Be the Answer

The LA Times reports new commentary published in Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology which claims that obesity is not easily remedied by diet and exercise, contrary to popular belief. The authors claim that after obesity has been established, it essentially becomes a biological part of the person, making it extremely difficult to reattain a healthy body weight without undergoing surgery. While changes in lifestyle are still an essential part of combating obesity, the authors say they are not sufficient on their own. Doctors need to encourage weight loss for overweight patients before they are actually obese as well as make patients aware of various medications, surgeries, and devices approved by the FDA that can be made available to them.
