Who Should Participate

This activity is designed for a broad audience that includes physicians, nurses, pharmacists, case managers and any other clinician whose scope of practice includes helping patients quit smoking or make other health behavior changes.

Overview of Methods and Participation

This ten-video program is designed to introduce the concept of motivational interviewing (MI) and its value in helping patients who smoke consider a quit attempt, as well as being applicable to other areas of health behavior change. Key components and strategies of MI will be explained, and video demonstrations of successful MI will be shown. Participants will be encouraged to consider how to integrate MI into their practice setting. Videos can be viewed and credit can be provided separately, although participation in the entire program is recommended.


Each of the ten activities is eligible for 0.25 CME credit. To receive at least 0.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ or up to a maximum 2.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™, you must view each of the videos, complete each post-test with a score of 70% or higher, and complete an evaluation form. You will then be able to print out your CME certificate.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of all ten videos, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify barriers and facilitators to health behavior change.
  2. Describe the spirit and skills of MI as they apply to smoking cessation and other health behavior changes.
  3. Differentiate between what MI is and what it is not.
